David Moufang has recorded some of the greatest electronic music ever. An important staple of the genre, David Moufang hardly needs an introduction. If you aren’t familiar with the name David Moufang, maybe you have heard of one or more of his other projects: Deep Space Network, Earth to Infinity, Reagenz, Koolfang, Conjoint, and of course Move D. The labels he has released material for read like a who’s who of ambient music: FAX, Instinct, Reflective, Source, Rising High, Beyond, Elektrolux, Astralwerks, Warp and many more. One of the most prolific Silent Records artists, he is arguably best known for his many releases for FAX Records, however, his releases with Jonas Grossmann under the name Deep Space Network and his material released on his very own Source Records make a valid argument. He has recorded with Pete Namlook, Jonah Sharp, Dr. Atmo, Thomas Meniecke, Bobbi Bird of Higher Intelligence Agency and more!

Born and raised in Heidelberg, Germany, and influenced by Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk and “2001: A Space Odyssey” it is easy to see why David Moufang became the influential artist he is today. Before recording his special brand of ambient techno, David spent time playing drums and guitar as well as spinning electro, funk and jazz as a DJ in Germany. When he walked into the Milk Club (a dance club in Mannheim) during a Techno night, Moufang first heard Detroit techno, and he immediately became a committed clubber and soon after changed his nickname to Move D.

With one more month of unbearable humidity ahead of us and nearly two months of rest and relaxation behind us it is time to look back and reflect. Although truth be told my summer hasn’t borne much rest and relaxation. It was Homer Simpson who said, “When you get a job like me you’ll miss every summer.” As it is, I take a moment to reflect on my summer – my summer and its lack of writing. Murmur took a brief hiatus, and I took an even longer hiatus as one thing led to another. To make up for it I believe I owe everyone a mix.

This year’s summer mix is called “Vibrations In the Air Have to Come From Somewhere.” I set out assembling these songs back in May with modest determination. I had recently overdrawn my checking account for the millionth-ma-billionth time, after I spent two months under the impression that I was fiscally all right, and I’d be damned if I let the man keep me from having fun this summer.

The first half of these songs reflect that attitude. “Bankrobber” is the type of Clash you listen to while you grill barbecued pineapple hamburgers with your best friends Memorial Day weekend, and “To Be Someone (Didn’t We Have a Nice Time)” is the Jam reminding me I’m screwed. Then about halfway through May I had the worst week of my life. Anyone who follows Murmur or looks in the links will know what happened. The summer mix completely changed gears, and I let it go because you have to let the mix speak its own language. A mix is like a self-portrait of the person assembling it. How do you feel at a given moment? How does your music logically arrange itself in a way that best illustrates a few weeks in your life? This mix is what it is – two halves of time and space – and I love it. I hope you love it, too.

“I’ve been DJing now for about 11 years. I first started at the tender age of 16. Over the years my style has varied, but the backbone of my sound has always been deep house, detroit techno and generally anything moody, edgy and groove based.

In more recent years I have been producing, and have released records on Crosstown Rebels, Freak N Chic, Poker Flat, Cocoon and Get Physical. As well as various remixes for different labels.

In 2009 I released my debut Album “Dont you remember the future” which has been one of the biggest dance albums of the year.

International DJ and producer Marques Wyatt is an influential messenger of the deepest, most soulful kind of house music. Beneath his relaxed, spiritual and unknowingly suave persona, therein lies a man partially responsible for giving birth to the West Coast house scene by bringing the fresh sounds of New York (a la Frankie Knuckles, Tony Humphries and Larry Levan) to Los Angeles beginning in the mid 80s. Carefully pointing out that he has “always had a deep passion for music,” you know that his adoration of house has been a gateway into the lives of thousands and thousands of people. Over the years promoting and playing an enormous amount of parties including BBC, Brass, MAC’s Garage, Does Your Mama Know? and currently LA’s biggest house club DEEP, Marques has changed the face of Southern California nightclubbing and the presentation of its music, sound and scene.

Today, he spends much of his time taking the sounds that emanate from his soul around the world, or laying them down in the studio in remixes and original compositions. Yet, he always returns to the club scene in his hometown of Los Angeles. He grew up in a loving, musical family that exposed him to everything from unique Afro rhythm sounds, jazz and soul to psychedelic rock. As a DJ he draws on a little bit of all these influences in silky smooth sets that never fail to be a buoyant celebration of life.

Local Washington, DC Businesses Join Forces to Present a Massive  4th of July Concert Event

Fort Knox Recordings and Capitol Hemp have joined forces with DC’s most exciting new venue, the U Street Music Hall to put together a solid concert for the 4th of July Independence Day celebrations.  Fort Knox Five, See-I and Nappy Riddem will all perform with live bands, with DJ support from Rex Riddem, JonH and Raskal and live visual projections by John Bowen of Video Killers and Empresarios.

Capitol Hemp recently expanded and opened their second location in Chinatown.  As DC’s only hemp stores, they have received widespread support from the community and are actively giving back to the community.  The Capitol Hemp “Custom Waste Veggie Oil Delivery Truck” will be parked out front as an interactive bio-fuel exhibit.  Adam Eidinger and Americans for Safe Access will also be on hand to help celebrate the 4th of July.

Fort Knox Five are on fire right now with a series of remix singles, releases and a brand new music video featuring Afrika Bambaataa.  Their music was recently licensed to Oscar Winning Best Documentary The Cove, the trailer for Touchstone/Disney’s You Again and Greg Stump’s forthcoming ski movie Legend of Aahh’s.  You can catch both Fort Knox Five and See-I on tour all summer long at some of the best venues and festivals nationwide.  Nappy Riddem and See-I are both releasing singles, remixes and finishing up full-length albums.  Fort Knox Recordings has been very busy and as always it is 100% Washington, DC artist owned and operated.

U Street Music Hall is the perfect venue for this exciting event.  Still brand new and boasting the best sound system in town, the audience will truly get The Big Boom experience!  The venue is also owned and operated by some of DC’s finest DJs and musicians – people who know and respect the local music industry.

Everyone was black, except me.  At one point an Asian couple walked in for about 5 minutes then left.  I on the other hand felt somewhat privileged to be there.  I saw it as an opportunity to see the inside underground world of hip hop.  I was introduced to many different musicians.  The bill composed of artists from DC and NYC.

Everybody seemed to know each other and there was a lot of support from the crowd.  I can’t really tell you who were the talents that performed.  Then again I can’t really tell who was part of the crowd or a posse or featured talent.  The microphone was being handed off every minute to a new person rapping.  The entire floor was the stage and there were no limits.  Rappers would walk around with the wireless mic and jump bar counter tops and going in and out of the crowd.  It was very intimate.  Everybody was dancing or putting their hands in the air and cheering.

I thought that photography wise, this was an extremely hard event to cover.  There wasn’t much lighting, everyone is black and I’m not using a flash, and because there was barely any light I had a very hard time focusing.  But what I got was very dramatic lighting, dynamic blurring motion and intensity expressed by the artists performing with all their passion.

“The world has lost one of the best MCs and Hip-Hop icons of all-time — my loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru,” Solar said in a statement. “Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius.”

The last time I looked at an up-to-date music chart out of sincere curiosity was in the late 90’s when I still subscribed to Rolling Stone. I was still in high school when I decided I had better things to listen to than the boy band b.s. handed down to us by MTV. The face of Twenty-first century pop remains very similar to Justin Timberlake’s and Christina Aguilera’s, so I see no need to examine another music chart when I still don’t care. However, I will study a music chart if it happens by accident, and if it leads me down a nice train of thought. Today I stumbled across a story about the latest UK singles chart http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/8603208.stm.

It seems that Lady Gaga has been toppled from the Number-1 spot by Scouting For Girls. I’ve never heard of Scouting For Girls, so this led me to wonder what a band called Scouting For Girls might sound like. Here they are
with the official video for their chart-topping song “This Ain’t A Love Song.”

A phrase that comes in handy for me X-number of times a day is  “Are you kidding me?” I think that says it best. This is not a defense of Lady Gaga or having her back in a bar fight. As the video for her former chart-topper “Telephone” shows us, Lady Gaga could probably stand fast and swing her own pool cue if need be. I’m just surprised that over a decade has passed since I cared about what was topping the charts, and nothing has changed. Scouting For Girls bare more resemblance to Vanessa Carlton than they do to Justin Timberlake, but sentimental gruel will never cease to dominate the airwaves. I had some hope. I must admit. I saw a song titled “This Ain’t A Love Song” topping a singles chart and thought for a second that maybe, just maybe, it might be worthwhile. Perhaps I just saw a song called “This Ain’t A Love Song” and immediately had visions of Public Image Limited.

Oh, but these visions and hopes are so misguided and futile. I tell myself I don’t look down on others for the music they claim to love. For the most part I follow this rule. In this case I can’t. It would be crass and hypocritical of me to say that PIL has more substance and merit than something as ridiculous as Scouting For Girls, but it’s true. That Scouting For Girls track is just so harmless. Music doesn’t have to be loud or abrasive or even offensive for me to call it edgy. Even if my ears aren’t bleeding I’ll still like it. I just like my power raw. I want my music to grit its teeth with a fresh tattoo still bleeding on its arm.

Music needs to take an honest chance. A flavorless Scouting For Girls and Lady Gaga’s blurred cooch just aren’t going to give me that honesty. I can’t define that honesty because it’s different in every case. All I know is that sometime in high school I realized honesty had no place at the top of a singles chart. I don’t think I want my honesty to top the charts. Honesty is by definition unfettered. Whatever tops the charts has gone through any number of processors on the way. Give me danger any day, as long as it’s bipolar and has teeth. Give me music minus the safeguards of public decency. It’s a lot more interesting out on the fringes. I might come back with an endearing scar or two.
