David Moufang has recorded some of the greatest electronic music ever. An important staple of the genre, David Moufang hardly needs an introduction. If you aren’t familiar with the name David Moufang, maybe you have heard of one or more of his other projects: Deep Space Network, Earth to Infinity, Reagenz, Koolfang, Conjoint, and of course Move D. The labels he has released material for read like a who’s who of ambient music: FAX, Instinct, Reflective, Source, Rising High, Beyond, Elektrolux, Astralwerks, Warp and many more. One of the most prolific Silent Records artists, he is arguably best known for his many releases for FAX Records, however, his releases with Jonas Grossmann under the name Deep Space Network and his material released on his very own Source Records make a valid argument. He has recorded with Pete Namlook, Jonah Sharp, Dr. Atmo, Thomas Meniecke, Bobbi Bird of Higher Intelligence Agency and more!

Born and raised in Heidelberg, Germany, and influenced by Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk and “2001: A Space Odyssey” it is easy to see why David Moufang became the influential artist he is today. Before recording his special brand of ambient techno, David spent time playing drums and guitar as well as spinning electro, funk and jazz as a DJ in Germany. When he walked into the Milk Club (a dance club in Mannheim) during a Techno night, Moufang first heard Detroit techno, and he immediately became a committed clubber and soon after changed his nickname to Move D.

Local Washington, DC Businesses Join Forces to Present a Massive  4th of July Concert Event

Fort Knox Recordings and Capitol Hemp have joined forces with DC’s most exciting new venue, the U Street Music Hall to put together a solid concert for the 4th of July Independence Day celebrations.  Fort Knox Five, See-I and Nappy Riddem will all perform with live bands, with DJ support from Rex Riddem, JonH and Raskal and live visual projections by John Bowen of Video Killers and Empresarios.

Capitol Hemp recently expanded and opened their second location in Chinatown.  As DC’s only hemp stores, they have received widespread support from the community and are actively giving back to the community.  The Capitol Hemp “Custom Waste Veggie Oil Delivery Truck” will be parked out front as an interactive bio-fuel exhibit.  Adam Eidinger and Americans for Safe Access will also be on hand to help celebrate the 4th of July.

Fort Knox Five are on fire right now with a series of remix singles, releases and a brand new music video featuring Afrika Bambaataa.  Their music was recently licensed to Oscar Winning Best Documentary The Cove, the trailer for Touchstone/Disney’s You Again and Greg Stump’s forthcoming ski movie Legend of Aahh’s.  You can catch both Fort Knox Five and See-I on tour all summer long at some of the best venues and festivals nationwide.  Nappy Riddem and See-I are both releasing singles, remixes and finishing up full-length albums.  Fort Knox Recordings has been very busy and as always it is 100% Washington, DC artist owned and operated.

U Street Music Hall is the perfect venue for this exciting event.  Still brand new and boasting the best sound system in town, the audience will truly get The Big Boom experience!  The venue is also owned and operated by some of DC’s finest DJs and musicians – people who know and respect the local music industry.

A Thousand Blooms was held at Bloombars in Columbia Heights, a small venue that is focused on art and culture.  It may easily be missed as you’re walking down the street, yet once you step in it’s difficult not to feel at home.  The art exhibit received a great turnout as it attracted not only spectators who received an invite in advance, but also random people passing by.

The film screening, which was directed by Richard, was a short film about mixed couples and the prejudice the family goes through.  It was about 30 minutes and received strong support.  Overall, it was an event that received a great response.

X is a local showcase that displays the rising artist talents in a wide spectrum of fields.  I’ve become a regular at the X events and particularly enjoy the fact that all the art displayed is created live.  It makes you feel like you’re a part of something growing and productive on a Friday night, while slowly becoming intoxicated (literally and figuratively).  This month 88 teamed up with Amnesty International and held it over in a tight little spot in Silver Spring, MD called Ceviche.  It was a little bit out of the way, and when I arrived I found myself in a restaurant before being told I needed to be upstairs.  However, the turnout was good and the vibe was just right.

DC’S HOTTEST MUSICIANS WILL GATHER FOR ANNIVERSARY  CONCERT AT ROCK & ROLL HOTEL on 4-20

Washington, DC  April 6, 2010 – When Adam Eidinger and Alan Amsterdam opened Capitol Hemp Clothing and Accessories on April 20, 2008, they never imagined it would be less than two years before they would open a second store at 519 H Street, NW.  Now the DC duo are pleased to announce they will host a major event at the Rock N Roll Hotel!! On the evening of Tuesday, April 20, 2010.  The event is expect to demonstrate the strong support in the DC community for Capitol Hemp which regularly showcases undiscovered artists and designers, gallery openings and special events.

The Anniversary concert will demonstrate Capitol Hemp’s deep committed to Washington, DC’s musicians, artists and activists. “We’ve assembled an all star line-up of some of DC’s most exciting musical artists,” says Adam Eidinger.  Doors open at 8pm, the show begins at 9pm and its an all ages event.  Tickets are only $10

Eight piece reggae band SEE-I is going to get the revellers dancing with their unique blend of soul, funk and 70’s dancehall grooves.  Featuring 6 members of Thievery Corporation, SEE-I really is a “Homegrown” super band!  Nationally touring act FORT KNOX FIVE is bringing their 5 piece live band with vocals by DC rapper ASHERU of Boondocks theme song fame.  FORT KNOX FIVE is debuting this live show for the DC massive before they are off on the festival circuit for the summer.  Rounding out the bill are DC’s rudeboys of funk NAPPY RIDDEM.  The two Rastars themselves, REX RIDDEM & MUSTAFA AKBAR are brining their live show to the party.  This is a concert not to miss, and a celebration to remember.

I remember the last time that Heidi (Get Physical, Berlin) came to town, there was quite a bit of hype going around.   Most people were really psyched.   All the people who believe in pussy-power (I’m one of those people by the way) were psyched to have a woman behind the decks.  A whole crew came down from NYC to see her play.  A cousin of mine from Greece who’s a student at Tech actually came up, and I saw her randomly.  I didn’t even know she was coming and it had been so long since I had last seen her, I actually blew her off at first because I thought it was some random that thought I was her friend.

And of course there were some haters.  Some of you motherfuckers immediately dismissed Heidi as a cover girl for the Get Physical Label (as if a label that’s so successful would need such a thing in the first place).   Coincidentally, those people also take the “we don’t like anything if we’ve heard it before” approach.  Which really means that they should just stick their head up their own assholes, so that they can listen to the sound of their intestine as it creates shit…and talk about how different and trend-setting THAT is.

Regardless of whether or not you’re a motherfucker or a great person, there are some things about Heidi which are undeniable.   She plays awesome music.  She’s an energetic DJ who clearly loves her career.  When Heidi is behind the decks, the whole room knows it because it’s impossible to ignore that bouncing, bubbly, blonde fro as she’s grinning and jumping up and down to the records that she drops.  When she played last year, there was a vibe in the room that was so dense, it had everybody getting down.   And I say that in the purest sense of the phrase.  In the same way that there’s a big difference between getting down to a cool ring tone and getting down to James Brown, there’s a big difference between getting down to Heidi and getting down to other dj’s.   As my sister put it at last year’s show, “Heidi brought the FUNK!”

On a personal level, playing with Heid last year was one of my favorite experiences as a DJ…and I’ve played with a lot of globe-trotters in my time.   Heidi was just awesome to hang with, to play with, to talk about music with…and to listen to.  She was really inspiring and one of the things I love most about her… she keeps it real.  I’ve waited almost exactly a whole year for her to come back, and it’s bound to be another special evening.  I just hope that a lot of you are able to make it over to share in on this great night.

In my experience working in DC, this is something completely new.  I recently have been involving myself in a film production crew to get back in the mode of film making process.  They way that this production has been bringing attention to themselves is by throwing events such as mixers, artist release parties, film festival, etc.  It’s a good active community.  The event took place at MOCA DC in Georgetown.

Anyway, let’s jump to the juicy details.  I felt like this is something out of a Kubrick movie or that I’ve been accepted into some bizarre exclusive club.  The gallery featured all nude art and photography that depicted erotic and near pornographic subject matter. A man with a beard and an eye patch introduces himself to me and tells about the studio and the workshops that go on here.  The models begin to disrobe and the nude photo sessions begin.  Where else do you have nude models walk about the event, free for me to take advantage of (in a good way).

There were a few other photographers grabbing some shots, but no one was really being assertive to help direct the models.  It was possible that it could have been kind of intimidating to be working with naked women in front of a large crowd overlooking your every move, just a little.  I was only suppose to be there to document the event, but since no one was really taking the opportunity I jumped in and started yelling and snapping away.

My only criticism was that the lighting was pretty horrible.  There were only one lit corner, the rest was dark.  So it was the only one little area I could shoot with sufficient lighting.  I wish that they had told me what was going to be available at this event, I would have brought my studio strobes.  But I made the best of it with what I had.

The models were beautiful.  One of the models was quite nervous, because she didn’t expect there to be more than one photographer and that there was going to be a crowd of people watching.  I struck up a conversation with her about art and art school.  After a while she felt a little more comfortable for me to photographer her.  I took her aside and we had a one on one session.  As I photographed her I could hear the echoing of shutter clicks behind me.

I left before the event ended because I drove there with a borrowed car and the other person needed to get to work by midnight.  So I leave you with an abrupt ending, exactly the way my night ended.
